Three deputies of the Sheriff of the Los Angeles County assigned to the details of the fire explosives caused were killed in an explosion in a law training center on Friday, said the Sheriff.

These deaths at the Biscail TRAINING Center in Monterey Park mark the largest loss of life loss for the department of the Los Angeles County Sheriff since 1857, said Sheriff Robert Luna at a press conference.

No one else was injured, said the sheriff, and the pump squad made the scene safe.

The cause of the explosion is not yet known, said the sheriff.

Luna called him an isolated incident and said there is no threat to the community.

Multiple sources of application reported on the investigation told ABC News that it seems that an explosive had been returned to the installation of a apparently routine bomb squad call on Thursday and believed it was inert when it later exploded.

In a statement on Friday night, the Sheriff’s department said the authorities returned to the residence of Santa Monica, where the deputies collected the possible device that exploded and planned to search for any possible explosive material by caution.

“At this time, it is not determined if the devices found yesterday have any correlation with today’s critical incident,” said Sheriff’s department statement.

Detective Joshua Kelley-Eklund joined the department in 2006. A field training officer became a detective in 2016 and was assigned to a team that investigates complex crimes. He became a caused and explosive investigator fire in 2022. His wife and seven children survive.

Detective Victor Lemus joined the department in 2003, became a K-9 manager in 2017 and a incendiary researcher last year. His wife survives, who is also a detective in the department, and three daughters. He also has three sisters who also work in the department.

Detective William Osborn joined the department in 1992. He worked as a detective for more than a decade before becoming an instructor of the emergency vehicle operations center in 2016. He became a fire fire and explosive researcher in 2019 and assumed the role of advising new researchers.

“These members, generally the average calls to which they go and deal with some very dangerous situations or articles, averaged approximately 1,100 per year. Therefore, these are not people who do not do this very often. They are fantastic experts and, unfortunately, I lost three of them today,” Luna said at the press conference.

Luna seemed emotional when he said he spoke with two of the families of the three victims.

“As you can imagine, those were extremely challenging conversations,” he said.

The County Supervisor, Janice Hahn, in a statement, described it as “an extraordinarily painful day for the department of our Sheriff and for the county of the”.

“My prayers are with the families of the deputies and their colleagues in the police who are recovering from this tragedy,” said Hahn. “I am offering my full support to our Sheriff Robert Luna and his department, since they not only work to support our deputies, but to investigate what went so bad. We need to reach the bottom of what happened and make sure that it never happens again.”

Fire investigators caused by the alcohol, tobacco, firearms and explosives office and the Los Angeles Fire Department are among those who respond, said Mayor Karen Bass.

The FBI was also on the scene, said Attorney General Pamela Bondi.

“Please, pray throughout the department of the Sheriff of the Los Angeles County,” Bondi wrote on social networks.
