Hundreds killed as the 6.0 magnitude earthquake attacks Afghanistan, destroying villages, authorities say

London – an earthquake of 6.0 struck the east of East Afghanistan on Sunday, destroying several villages and killing hundreds, according to a local official and the United Nations mission.

More than 600 people died and more than 1,300 were injured in the province of Kunar, told MUFTI ABDUL Matin Qani, spokesman for the Ministry of Interior, to the Afghan media on early Monday. Another dozen people died in the province of Nangarhar, he said.

The United Nations Mission in Afghanistan said in a statement that its employees were “deeply sad” by the “devastating” earthquake, which “hundreds of lives were charged, hurting many more.”

The powerful earthquake hit about 17 miles east of Jalalabad, near the border with Pakistan just before midnight, according to preliminary data from the United States geological service.

Afghan Minister of Health said that several villages in the Nurgal de Kunar district, including Sholt, Arit, Mamagal, Wadir and others, had almost destroyed. Others suffered significant damage, said the minister.

Mujahid said the support teams from the nearby provinces had been sent to the area.
