Officer seriously injured in collision with state police during Vance motorcade

Two law enforcement officers were involved in a crash Friday night while providing security for Vice President JD Vance’s motorcade in Maryville, Tennessee, leaving one officer seriously injured, authorities said.

A Maryville Police Department motor unit officer and a state trooper were involved in the incident “during an executive protection mission involving multiple law enforcement agencies,” Maryville officials said.

A spokesperson for the United States Secret Service confirmed to ABC News that Vance was in the motorcade.

“The United States Secret Service is closely monitoring a serious traffic incident involving local law enforcement personnel that occurred this afternoon in Maryville, Tennessee, while supporting a protective caravan movement,” Katherine Pierce, resident agent in charge of the Knoxville office, said in a separate statement. He said that “the protectees were not affected by this incident.”

Pierce added: “Our thoughts are with those officers, their families and their agencies.”

An ambulance that was part of the motorcade stopped and provided immediate medical attention to the injured officer, according to Special Agent Jason Pack, director of communications for the Tennessee Department of Safety and Security. The officer was transported to the University of Tennessee Medical Center for additional treatment, Pack said Saturday.

Maryville police officials said the officer was in critical condition.

The police officer involved in the collision was also evaluated by paramedics and was not transported, authorities said.

“We ask everyone to keep the officer, family and medical staff in your prayers,” Maryville Police Chief Tony Crisp said in a statement. statement. “All of us at the Maryville Police Department appreciate the concern and outpouring of support from this incredible community.”

City officials said additional information will be released as it becomes available.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
